This bill, if enacted as is, would require
driver education courses to also acquaint each student with the hazards of
leaving young children unattended in vehicles, of motor vehicle blind
spots, of backing motor vehicles around small children, and of accidental
activation of power windows and to provide instruction in safely dealing

NOTE: SB 561 passed in Committee in Mid March 2008, but never
got to a floor vote. It is very likley it will be revisited in the
next legislative session.

SB- 240:
BILL WOULD RESTRICT TEENS’ USE OF CELL PHONES WHILE DRIVING
A handful of legislators have signed on to a bill to
prohibit the use of cell phones by 16- and 17-year-olds while operating a
car or motorcycle. The proposal (SB-240) would apply to holders of
instructional permits and probationary licenses. The penalty for violating
the prohibition would be a $50 forfeiture for the first offense and not
less than $50 nor more than $100 for each subsequent offense.
Lead
sponsor on the bill is Sen. Luther Olsen. Other senators co-sponsoring the
proposal are: Darling, Lassa, Lehman, Roessler and Taylor. Rep. Petrowski
is the lead Assembly co-sponsor, joined by Reps. Albers, Benedict, Berceau,
Bies, Cullen, Hahn, Hines, Jeskewitz, Molepske, A. Ott, Seidel, Smith,
Townsend, Travis, Van Roy, Vos and Zepnick. The bill was referred to the
Senate Transportation, Tourism and Insurance Committee.
