DMV Information Pertaining to:

Wisconsin Act 126

January 2007.....

Legal Presence Document

As of January 16, 2007 individuals applying for an original instruction permit must have appropriate legal presence documentation.  It applies to all customers applying for an original instruction permit who fall sunder one of the following categories:

<> Individuals who are not eligible for a social security number because of their immigration status in this country (they are not here legally)

<> Individuals who do not list their social security number on their original instruction permit application and they don't have an existing driver record).

This information is related to Wisconsin Act 126, which requires legal presence documentation in order to receive a Wisconsin Driver License or ID card and it is effective on 4/1/2007.

If the DMV issue's an instruction permit without a social security number, the individual will be required to return to the Service Center to schedule road test appointments occurring on or after 4/1/2007.   To avoid this, please have your students list the SS number on their application before they visit a Service Center for their original permit.

By listing their SS number on their application, they will be able to use our online road test scheduling system. Without their SS number, they will be required to return to the Service Center to make an appt.
